Sovereign capability is increasingly recognised as a national priority, particularly in sectors critical to health, security and economic resilience. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the risks associated with dependence on international supply chains and reinforced the importance of domestic capability in advanced therapeutic development and manufacturing.
This presentation examines how mRNA technology has become a catalyst for building sovereign capability in Australia. Drawing on mRNA Victoria’s experience, it will explore the development of a connected ecosystem encompassing research, translation, manufacturing, workforce development and industry engagement.
The presentation will consider the strategic value of domestic capability, from strengthening preparedness for future health emergencies to supporting economic growth, attracting investment and enabling the development of next-generation therapies. As RNA technologies expand into oncology, autoimmune conditions and personalised medicine, building capability today will shape Australia's ability to participate in tomorrow's healthcare innovations.
